Dog: A serious comedy. Channing Tatum is an ex-deployed Army Ranger recovering from a brain injury. He wants to complete a security course, but needs approval from his previous C. O. Unsure whether Tatum is fit , the official promises to approve the course in the event that Tatum brings the temperamental Combat Dog, Lulu, to the funeral of her handler in Arizona. A road film follows with hilarious scenes of Lulu making a mess of Tatum’s meeting with yoga teachers who are tantric and a quaint off-the-grid hippie couple, and creating chaos in the hotel. There’s plenty of laughter but there’s also a serious aspect to the movie. Alcoholism, PTSD, addiction to drugs and the break-up of families in the case of wounded war veterans are discussed. The othering and monsterizing of the enemy as well as the impact it can have on dogs in the military environment. An engaging film that you’ll never forget in a flash. Directed by Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, Written by Carolin and Brett Rodriguez. 8/10.
